A Side to the Countryside
Hinterlands, Issue 3: Green, 2022; printed, 180 x 248mm

An essay for Hinterlands magazine on New Addington in Croydon and the London green belt. The essay refers to the UK Land Cover atlas, which shows that six percent of land is classified as ‘built-up’. This covers uses such as buildings, roads, airports and quarries, leaving over 90 per cent of land with designations such as pasture, grassland, heathland and forest. The developed areas are marked by red speckles which are scattered over a predominant broth of citrus, brown and forest green. The main green groups are termed ‘farmland’, ‘natural’ and ‘urban green’ with the last of these representing green space manufactured by people: parks, gardens, golf courses and football fields.
