Two Mounds
Research Project
A drawing project that charts the two mounds that Dudley, a town in the West Midlands, nestles within. The two landscapes have two different lives today but share histories of extraction. The first (bottom right) was fortified with the building, rebuilding and ruin of Dudley Castle. Named Castle Hill, it is an outcrop of the Wenlock Group limestone that was extensively quarried during the Industrial Revolution. The second, (top left) is Wren’s Nest, a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. Now one of the most important geological sites in Britain, Wren’s Nest was once a quarry landscape for the extraction of lime and building stone. It has become known for its well-preserved Silurian coral reef fossils and is considered the most diverse and abundant fossil site in the British Isles.
